DOG SHELTER

2025

Exhibition

Dog-shelter is an exhibition curated by Vinícius Maffei at Milky Way Gallery, New York. The show included works by the collectives Betraying Gestures and Dog-Ears, and by the artists Pepi Lemes and Waqas Elahi Dar.

"The alluded shelter of Dog Shelter is small and

tucked in the attic of a building that is itself filled with compartmented spaces, studios sheltering practices and artists in the same way that Milky Way, New York Gallery shelters this exhibition.

The gallery slopes like a kennel. The ceiling tilts low. The staged dog shelter consists of four glass plates hung from the ceiling. Between each plate, a work conveying dog as motif and subject, play, instead, the subject and motif of dog as neither, but as story.

Dog Shelter is a sequence of narratives: emotional,

semantic, anecdotal. The word shelter, as an architecture, reveals a syntax through which Betraying Gestures and Dog-ears operate. Pepi Lemes and Waqas Elahi Dar, as much as the collectives featured in Dog Shelter, represent

a dog that, either through aggression or tenderness, tries a language that defers and that what what what what (a bark or a lick on the face)."
